KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Different trips bring different braces risks. A road trip to Lake Wallenpaupack and a flight to Italy each need their own prep strategy.
  • Distance from your orthodontist matters most. Local trips give you flexibility; international travel demands more preparation, more backup, and a contingency plan.
  • Wax, a copy of your treatment plan, and our phone number are the three universal items every braces traveler should pack, regardless of trip type or destination.
  • Cruise and camping trips have unique hygiene challenges. Limited water access, irregular meal schedules, and no nearby orthodontists all require extra preparation.
  • Call us at 570-587-1196 before you go. A short pre-trip check-in catches loose brackets or worn wires before they become vacation problems.

Introduction

You're packing the SUV in your driveway in Clarks Summit at 6 AM. The lake house is rented for the week, the bikes are loaded, and the cooler is taking up half the back seat. Your tween in braces is still half-asleep in the passenger seat, holding the iPad that will absorb the next ninety minutes of mountain driving up to Lake Wallenpaupack. The thought hits you somewhere around the turn for Route 247: did we pack the wax?

Summer travel and braces don't have to be at odds, but every type of trip carries its own set of risks. A road trip into the Poconos, a flight to a family reunion, a week at a campground, a cruise out of Baltimore, or two weeks in Europe each pose different challenges. At Ortho Unlimited , Dr. Samantha Abod , Dr. John Mariotti , and Dr. Carolyn Serio have helped families across Northeast Pennsylvania travel confidently with braces for more than 40 years. This guide walks through five common travel types and what to pack, prepare, and watch for in each one.

Meet Dr. Abod, Dr. Mariotti, and Dr. Serio

Dr. Samantha Abod , Dr. John Mariotti , and Dr. Carolyn Serio lead Ortho Unlimited with a combined wealth of specialty orthodontic experience. Each brings deep clinical expertise in traditional braces and Invisalign , along with a patient-first approach that has earned the trust of NEPA families across Lackawanna, Wayne, Pike, and Luzerne Counties.

Together with our team, we've helped create more than 20,000 happy smiles across our five Pennsylvania offices over the past 40 years. Smile without limits is the way we approach every patient and every smile journey, no matter where life or summer travel takes them.

Why Travel Prep Matters for Braces Patients

Braces are designed to handle daily life, but daily life and vacation life look different. On a normal day at home, a poking wire is easy to address: call our office, schedule a quick visit, get it taken care of within hours. On vacation, that same poking wire might mean a multi-day stretch of discomfort and a quietly ruined trip. The right preparation for the right type of travel keeps small issues small.

1 Road Trips
2 Air Travel (Domestic)
3 Camping and Outdoor Adventures
4 Cruises
5 International Vacations

Travel Type #1: Road Trips

This is the most common summer travel type for NEPA families. Road trips offer the most flexibility for braces patients because you're usually within driving distance of orthodontic care.

TYPE 1

Road Trips

(Most flexible, lowest risk)

The Challenge:

Long stretches in the car bring snack-heavy eating, irregular brushing, and unfamiliar meal stops. The challenge is maintaining your hygiene routine on the road and avoiding the food traps at every gas station and rest stop.

What to Pack & Prepare:

  • A small zip pouch with orthodontic wax, floss picks, and a travel toothbrush
  • A water bottle that travels with you all day, refilled at every stop
  • Pre-packed soft snacks (string cheese, soft granola, banana bread)
  • Sugar-free gum is off limits, but mints are fine for fresh breath
  • Our phone number stored in your phone and the photo of your treatment plan saved in your camera roll

Watch Out For:

Gas station and rest stop food is engineered to be hard, sticky, or both. Jerky, hard pretzels, and chewy candies are the most common bracket-breakers we see after road trips.

Travel Type #2: Air Travel (Domestic)

Air travel introduces challenges that don't exist on road trips: TSA, time changes, dry airplane cabins, and constrained meal options once you're at altitude.

TYPE 2

Air Travel (Domestic)

(Moderate flexibility, moderate risk)

The Challenge:

Dry cabin air makes mouths drier, increasing plaque risk. Time changes disrupt routines. Airport food often skews toward the hardest, stickiest options. You're also a few hours from home rather than a quick drive.

What to Pack & Prepare:

  • Pack your wax and dental kit in your carry-on, never checked luggage
  • A reusable water bottle that you fill after security
  • Soft snacks from home (TSA-friendly options like soft granola bars, dried-fruit-free trail mix)
  • A printed copy of your treatment summary in your bag
  • A backup orthodontic wax stash in your day pack

Watch Out For:

Airport pretzels, kettle corn, and hard candies at the gate. Coffee with milk in clear braces (staining risk). Skipping mealtime brushing because of tight connections.

Travel Type #3: Camping and Outdoor Adventures

Camping is the most underestimated travel type for braces patients. Outdoor adventures combine limited water access, irregular meal timing, and unique snack choices that don't show up at home.

TYPE 3

Camping and Outdoor Adventures

(Limited access, higher risk)

The Challenge:

Campgrounds rarely have running water at individual sites. Cooking is often over a fire or grill. S'mores, hot dogs on hard buns, and trail mix with nuts dominate the menu. Hygiene becomes harder, and dental wax becomes essential.

What to Pack & Prepare:

  • Extra orthodontic wax (two or three packs, plus a backup in your tent)
  • A water-based portable kit: water bottle for rinsing, travel toothbrush, floss
  • Pre-cut soft snacks instead of trail mix with whole nuts
  • S'mores are doable with soft chocolate and graham crackers, but skip the very sticky marshmallows
  • A simple emergency kit with our office number and the closest dental clinic to your campground

Watch Out For:

Trail mix with whole nuts, hard pretzels at the cooler, marshmallows that pull at brackets, and skipping toothbrushing because the bathhouse is a long walk away.

Travel Type #4: Cruises

Cruises are uniquely challenging because you're often hundreds of miles from any orthodontist for days at a time, the food is abundant and constant, and the on-board medical center isn't equipped for orthodontic emergencies.

TYPE 4

Cruises

(Isolated, higher risk)

The Challenge:

You're surrounded by buffet food (including many bracket-breakers), at sea for days at a time, and the ship doctor cannot fix orthodontic appliances. A small wire issue can ruin an entire week if you're not prepared.

What to Pack & Prepare:

  • Double your normal wax supply
  • Pack a complete portable dental kit and a backup in your stateroom
  • Print or save a clear photo of your current braces setup before you board
  • Call our office before sailing to identify port stops where orthodontic care might be accessible if needed
  • Bring your treatment plan summary in case any port-stop care is needed

Watch Out For:

Buffet bread and pretzel rolls, hard candies at every venue, chewy steak cuts in dining rooms, sticky pastries at breakfast, and the temptation to skip oral hygiene when you're celebrating.

Travel Type #5: International Vacations

International trips need the most preparation. Different time zones, unfamiliar foods, language barriers, and the longest distance from your home orthodontist all combine to make planning essential.

TYPE 5

International Vacations

(Maximum distance, highest planning need)

The Challenge:

You may not speak the local language. Local dental care varies widely. Unfamiliar foods carry unknown risks. The trip is usually longer and more expensive, which means a vacation-ending emergency is more costly to recover from.

What to Pack & Prepare:

  • A pre-trip orthodontic visit is non-negotiable for international travel
  • Triple your wax supply and pack it in your carry-on
  • A written treatment summary with our contact info, your braces type, and what is currently in your mouth
  • Research the nearest English-speaking orthodontist at your destination before you leave
  • Travel insurance that covers dental emergencies abroad
  • Photos of your current braces setup, saved in cloud storage and printed in your luggage

Watch Out For:

Unfamiliar street foods, language barriers when seeking emergency care, time zones that disrupt your hygiene routine, jet lag that affects vigilance, and the temptation to wait until you get home if something goes wrong.

Universal Travel Prep Tips

Across all five travel types, the same handful of habits give you the most protection. Here are the five we recommend most often to our patients.

  • Schedule a pre-trip visit. A short check-in at any of our five offices catches worn brackets and loose wires before they become emergencies.
  • Pack wax, wax, and more wax. It's the single most useful item in any travel kit, regardless of trip type. Stock up before you leave.
  • Save our number in your phone. 570-587-1196 belongs in your contacts before any trip. We can usually walk you through any minor issue over the phone or text.
  • Pack a backup oral hygiene kit. Toothbrush, fluoride toothpaste, and floss picks belong in your day bag, not just your luggage.
  • Photograph your current setup. A clear photo before you leave gives us a baseline if you need to send images during your trip.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I get a pre-trip orthodontic visit before traveling?

Yes, especially for trips longer than a week or destinations more than a few hours from home. A 15-minute pre-trip visit lets us check your appliances, tighten anything loose, replace worn ligatures, and send you off with extra supplies. The visit is short, the value is huge, and it routinely prevents the issues we see most often after summer travel.

What if a bracket comes loose while we're at the lake?

Apply orthodontic wax to any sharp edge, save any loose pieces in a small bag, and call our office at 570-587-1196. If you're at Lake Wallenpaupack or anywhere in NEPA, we can usually see you within a day or two. For trips farther away, we can walk you through what to do over the phone.

Can my child fly with braces?

Yes, flying with braces is completely safe and very common. Cabin pressure changes don't affect braces or aligners. The main considerations are staying hydrated during the dry flight, packing dental supplies in your carry-on, and avoiding hard airport snacks before and during the flight.

What about cruise emergencies?

Ship medical centers are not equipped for orthodontic emergencies. Before sailing, we recommend a pre-trip visit, a doubled wax supply, and a clear understanding of port-stop options. For most issues, wax buys you days of comfort. We're also reachable by phone or text from most cruise destinations.

How far in advance should I schedule a pre-trip visit?

Aim for 1 to 2 weeks before departure. That gives us time to address anything we find, and gives you time to follow up if needed. For international or extended trips, schedule 3 to 4 weeks ahead so any major adjustments can settle before you go.
