The costume is picked. The pillowcase is ready. Then comes the big question on the drive home from our Carbondale office: "Can I get orange and black for Halloween?"

Yes. Absolutely yes. Maybe you are a Carbondale Area student heading to the Trunk or Treat on Brooklyn Street, and you want your smile to match your look. Maybe you are a parent who just wants to know which colors will still look good in the Halloween photos. Either way, you are in the right place.

Our team has been placing braces in Northeastern Pennsylvania since 1984, and we have treated more than 20,000 smiles across our five offices over 40 years. That is a lot of color picks. We have learned which combos pop in photos, which ones fade into the background, and which ones look like leftover lunch by week two.

Here is our promise. By the end of this post, you will know what braces colors actually are, which combinations shine for Halloween, how to match a costume, and how to keep your colors looking fresh through candy season. Picking colors is one of the best parts of having braces. Let’s make it count.

What Are Braces Colors, Anyway?

Braces colors are small elastic rings, called ligature ties, that sit around each bracket. The bracket is the little square glued to your tooth, the archwire runs through all the brackets and does the moving, and the tie is the colorful part everyone sees. The AAO explains the bracket-and-wire system as the foundation of traditional braces.

Here is a fun fact about braces at Ortho Unlimited: our metal braces use a small self-ligating bracket with a tiny built-in door that holds the wire. That means the wire stays put without any tie at all. The colored elastics we add are purely for personality, which is exactly why we love them.

What Are the Best Braces Colors for Halloween?

Orange and black is the all-time Halloween champion, and it looks fantastic alternating tooth by tooth. But the fun does not stop there. Purple and lime green read as witchy, and black and silver give you vampire or skeleton energy.

Bring this list to your next visit, point at your pick, and we will set it. Mix two colors, go with one bold color, or alternate a pattern across your smile. It is your call.

Halloween combo The vibe Perfect for
Orange and black Classic pumpkin patch Jack-o-lanterns, cats, trick-or-treat night
Purple and lime green Spooky and playful Witches, monsters, haunted house trips
Black and silver Sleek and mysterious Vampires, skeletons, ghosts in black and white
Red and black Bold and fierce Superheroes, ladybug costumes
Blue and red Hometown pride Carbondale Area Chargers game nights in late October
Navy and orange Autumn with a twist Fall festivals, hayrides, cozy sweater weather
Solid deep purple One color, big impact Anyone who wants whiter-looking teeth with a spooky edge

Carbondale Area football runs right through October under the Friday night lights. Blue and red ties in the stands, then a swap to orange and black at the next visit? That is a month of smiling done right.

How Do You Match Braces Colors to a Costume?

Pick two colors from your costume and let your smile carry them. Start with the color that covers the most of your outfit, then add the accent color that shows up in the details, like a cape, a belt, or a hat.

When the costume has three or more colors, choose the two that contrast most. Dark plus bright almost always wins in photos. If you are stuck, dark blue or purple is the safe partner for nearly any accent color because it makes teeth look brighter.

Not sure what you are dressing up as yet? Go with a classic Halloween combo and let the costume catch up. Orange and black go with everything from a cat to a cowboy.

Which Braces Colors Make Your Teeth Look Whiter, and Which Should You Skip?

Darker, cooler colors make teeth look whiter by contrast. Navy blue, royal blue, deep purple, and black are our go-to choices when a patient wants the brightest-looking smile. Light teeth next to a dark tie simply look lighter.

A few colors work against you. Yellow and gold pull warm tones out of your teeth. White and clear ties pick up stains quickly and can make teeth look duller, not brighter. Brown and dark green are fun in theory, but in our experience they are often mistaken for food caught in your braces, which is nobody’s Halloween goal.

None of this is a rule you have to follow. If yellow makes you happy, pick yellow. We just want you to know what the mirror may show you, so you can choose with confidence.

Do Braces Colors Stain During Candy Season?

Yes, elastic ties can absorb color from what you eat and drink, and the lighter the tie, the more you notice it. Clear, white, and pale pastel ties show it first. Darker ties hide it. That's another reason navy, purple, and black are popular picks for October.

Good news: fresh ties go on at every adjustment, so a stained set is never permanent. In between, brushing after candy and rinsing with water after a dark drink keeps the colors closer to how they looked when you left our chair. The American Dental Association (ADA) also suggests enjoying candy with meals, when extra saliva helps rinse sugar away.

How Often Can You Change Your Braces Colors?

You get new colors at every adjustment visit. According to the AAO, those visits happen every 4 to 12 weeks depending on where you are in treatment. The AAO also notes that self-ligating brackets, the kind we use, generally allow more time between appointments, which is great for busy families and school schedules.

Our best tip: think a season ahead. Pick Halloween colors at the October visit, then switch to red and green, blue and white, or whatever your holidays call for at the next one. Every appointment becomes a small celebration.

What Halloween Candy Is Safe With Braces?

Soft chocolate, peanut butter cups, and anything that melts rather than sticks are your friends. Caramel, taffy, gummies, hard candy, and popcorn are the troublemakers that bend wires and pop brackets. We wrote a full guide to Halloween candy with braces, so here is the short version.

Can You Do Halloween Colors With Invisalign or Ceramic Braces?

Ceramic braces

Yes. Our ceramic braces use clear, tooth-colored brackets, and colored ties fit on them just like on metal brackets. Many ceramic patients choose clear or pearl ties for a subtle look most of the year, then go orange and black for one glorious October. Just remember that clear ties stain fastest, so brush well after the candy haul.

Invisalign clear aligners

No colors here, and that is the point. Invisalign aligners have no brackets or ties, so there is nothing to color. They are nearly invisible, which makes them the ghost costume of orthodontics.

Aligner wearers still win Halloween. Take the trays out, enjoy the candy, brush, and put the trays back in. No food is off limits because nothing ever touches the aligner. Just keep the trays in their case, never a napkin, and hit your daily wear time so your smile stays on schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions About Braces Colors for Halloween

What braces colors are best for Halloween?

Orange and black are the classic Halloween braces combo, and purple with lime green is a close second. Black with silver reads as vampire or skeleton, and red with black works for devils, superheroes, and Carbondale Area Chargers fans. Pick two colors and alternate them tooth by tooth, or go all one color for a bold, simple look.

Do colored braces bands stain?

Yes, elastic ties can pick up color from what you eat and drink. A 2026 laboratory study in Scientific Reports found coffee, turmeric, and black tea caused the biggest color changes in clear ties over ten days. Darker ties like navy, purple, and black hide stains well, while clear, white, and pale ties show them fastest.

Which braces colors make your teeth look whiter?

Darker, cooler colors make teeth look brighter by contrast. Navy blue, royal blue, deep purple, and black are the strongest choices if you want a whiter-looking smile. Yellow, white, gold, and clear ties tend to make teeth look duller, and brown or dark green can be mistaken for food, so most of our patients skip them.

Can you pick braces colors with Invisalign?

No. Invisalign clear aligners have no brackets or elastic ties, so there are no colors to choose. The aligners are nearly invisible, which is why many teens and adults pick them. Aligner wearers can still enjoy Halloween by removing trays for candy, brushing before trays go back in, and matching their costume however they like.
